Snapshot 1

  • Below is a typical example of Everton's shape in-possession versus Brighton's out-of-possession shape

  • Here you can see how with the ball Everton would push their fullbacks higher to provide the team width and this allowed both Rodriguez and Richarlison to play more infield

  • On the Everton right flank, Rodriguez, Doucoure and Coleman would regularly interchange positions, and on the left flank Richarlison would play high against the Brighton defensive line allowing Digne space to attack down the wing and Sigurdsson space in the left half-space pockets

  • Without the ball, Brighton would get into a 343 high block with their wingbacks pushing up on their flank to engage the ball in wide areas and then this block would transition into a 523 mid-block and then into a 541 low block

Snapshot 2

  • Below is a typical example of Brighton's shape in-possession versus Everton's out-of-possession shape

  • Here you can see how Brighton would get into a 325 in-possession structure with their wingbacks pushing high on the outside and against the Everton backline, with Trossard, Connolly and Maupay occupying the most advanced central areas, each with the ability to play between-the-lines, pull out wide and run in-behind to stretch the play

  • Without the ball, Everton would get into a 541 mid / low block shape, priortising blocking central areas of the pitch

Result

  • Half-Time = 2-1

  • Full-Time = 4-2
