Snapshot 1

  • Below is a typical example of Real Madrid's shape in-possession versus Shakhtar's out-of-possession shape

  • In-possession Real Madrid pushed their fullbacks higher which allowed their wide forwards to come infield to the half-spaces - Asensio would tend to drift more centrally whereas Rodrygo would attack both on the inside and outside

  • Modric tended to position himself a bit deeper to a) find space and b) make forward passes in front of the Shakhtar defensive shape

  • Shakhtar got into a 4141 mid-block out-of-possession shape and in their low block Solomon could drop on the outside of the left fullback to track Mendy when he advanced high in the final third

Snapshot 2

  • Below is a typical example of Shakhtar's shape in-possession versus Real Madrid's out-of-possession shape

  • Shakhtar were comfortable playing out from the back, in particular playing through the Real Madrid high press

  • To help Shakhtar play out, and in middle third possession, Maycon would drop deeper, in between the two central defenders, which allowed the fullbacks to push higher and then the wide forwards would come infield to play in the half-spaces, plus, interchange with Dentinho

Result

  • Half-Time = 0-3

  • Full-Time = 2-3
