Snapshot 1

  • Below is a typical example of Real Sociedad's shape in-possession versus Atletico Madrid's out-of-possession shape

  • With the ball Real Sociedad had lots of positional movements and tried to build possession through the thirds

  • Their fullbacks would hold the width with Gorosabel advancing higher on the right flank and Monreal holding a slightly deeper position on the left flank, only tending to support attacks when Sociedad had controlled possession in the final third

  • In central areas, the two centre backs would be the base of Sociedad's in-possession structure with Zubimendi ahead of them as the midfield pivot, but at times he could also drop in between them to help Sociedad play out / build up the pitch

  • Merino would advance into the right half-spaces and offer an attacking option out wide on the right flank, if Gorosabel was deeper, but in the final third when the right fullback was occupying the right flank then he could drop back alongside Zubimendi to help Sociedad maintain possession and try to play through the Atletico low block

  • Portu inverted from the right wing and attacked central areas, getting closer to Willian Jose, whereas Barrenetxea - who could still attack on the inside at times - would tend to hold the width on the left flank

  • Willian Jose would lead the Sociedad forward line and try to occupy the Atletico central defenders to help create space for others, namely David Silva who would take up lots of positions between-the-lines, in central and half-spaces, but mainly tried to find pockets of space across the frontline to then combine with other players

  • Without the ball, Atletico had various defensive systems - in a high block they tended to be 442 with the wingback and wide midfielder pushing up if the ball was on their side and then the opposite fullback and wide midfielder each dropping e.g. if Atletico were pressing high on their right side, then Trippier would push up to right midfield and Correa would push up alongside Suarez, then Lemar would drop to left midfield and Carrasco to left fullback, and then vice versa when pressing on their left side

  • However, Atletico spent the majority of the game in their 541 mid / low block shape, as per the visual above

Snapshot 2

  • Below is a typical example of Atletico Madrid's shape in-possession versus Real Sociedad's out-of-possession shape

  • In possession, Atletico's wingbacks would advance and maintain the team's width, with Carrasco playing higher, up against the Sociedad defensive line, on the left flank and Trippier being slightly deeper on the right flank

  • Atletico predominantly built with three at the back but when they had sustained possession in the Socieded half / final third, Hermoso could advance on the left flank to support

  • In midfield, Koke was the midfield pivot, Llorente would make advanced runs, both centrally and into the right channel, and Lemar would play in the advanced left half-spaces but could drop at times to help Atletico maintain and/or advance possession

  • Correra would push inside to play nearer Suarez but like Llorente, could also make runs in-behind into the right channel, and Suarez would lead the Atletico forward line, both dropping short to combine with the advanced midfields and offering a threat in-behind the Sociedad defensive line

Result

  • Half-Time = 0-0

  • Full-Time = 0-2
